The prestigious Yemisi Shylon Museum of Arts in Lagos, Nigeria has been shortlisted for the award as the “Museum Opening of the year” by “Apollo Magazine  among other museums world wide.

The other shortlisted museums are: Aberdeen Art Gallery (Reopened November 2019), The Box, Plymouth (Opened September 2020), British Galleries, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Reopened March 2020), Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister und Skulpturensammlung bis 1800, Dresden (Reopened February 2020), KBR Museum, Brussels (Opened September 2020)

This  achievement is better appreciated, with  the   shortlisting of YSMA at Pan Atlantic University for the award, in  making  it the only potential award winner from Africa.  YSMA is   the only such museum, from among other museums operating  outside Europe and America.  All the other listed  museums,  are  from either Europe or America. There is therefore need to celebrate this achievement, as being of  no mean fit ,  for a museum that only took off in October 2019, amid all the problems and challenges of COVID-19 lockdowns  of  year  2020

The first dedicated university art museum in Nigeria is named after Yemisi Shyllon, a Yoruba prince who has donated about 1,000 works to it – a founding collection that ranges from pre-colonial objects to modern and contemporary works by Ben Enwonwu, Nike Davies-Okundaye and others. Shyllon has also committed to funding the museum for at least 15 years.
